Anyone know where to look for a user manual? - google drew a blank!

Chances are that it's a rebadged 'stock' item. Try a broad search for
"Digital Counter", filter through 'search within results' for something
obvious, such as frequency, supply voltage, input sockets, supplied
accessory probe, then look at the pics. It doesn't always work, but on
the other hand, destruction books for generic test gear usually follow
along the same lines. You download one, you've downloaded most of 'em.

Maplin have replied to my email and tell me its stock code was MF82D and was
made by Hung Chang - but can't tell me what the OM model number was.

Searching for "frequency counters" or "frequency meter" gets millions of
hits for just about everything but..........

Try to figure out the specification for it and use those terms as search
terms.
