Manufacturing costs / small PV cells

  1. Hello,

    I found this newsgroup while searching for information on
    manufacturing costs of small PV cells. Perhaps some of you knowledgeable
    people can answer the following:

    1) How much does it cost to manufacture(not purchase) a solar
    cell (e.g. a 1m^2 size)? This can be an average, and location of
    manufacturing can be anywhere.

    2) I've read that typical PV cell efficiencies hover around ten
    percent. Is this correct?

    (take the following a a very general overview)

    Silicon solar cells commonly come in 4",5" and 6" sizes.
    Solar panels are usually made up of 36 solar cells to produce
    12v under load.

    Silicon solar cells are roughly 12-14% efficient.

    To make an approximately 1 meter square panel you might use 36
    6 inch solar cells.

    Cost to manufacture is hard to say exactly. If 36 cells cost you $300
    in volume and glass, frame box and assembly cost you another $200
    then it would cost you $500 per panel. These panels sell for more
    than $600 and are refered to as 100, 110 and 120 watt panels.
