Fixing some instruments I often come across 5 figures Mfr. # in the
nomenclature. Unfortunately there's often no name/Mfr# table.

Is there such a thing as an official Mfr.# list (and where) or is there
as many lists as instrument manufacturers and the 5 figures # are just
coincidences?

The only type of numeric identity list I know of is OUIs (for ethernet
MACs, for instance). It's administered by IEEE, as I recall.

That number is what's known as a Commercial And Government Entity
(CAGE) code and it's maintained by the Defense Logistics Information
Service (DLIS):

and you can do a search at:

I call them "mouse numbers", and unless you work for the damn company
that did that foolishment and work in the department that did that, you
are SOL.

The EIA maintains a list of all manufacturers by code number. We used
it in the past to locate manufacturers of computer monitors

The FCC assigns numbers to products as well.
I have used that to track down a device driver for a rebranded monitor.
