Luxeon V Blue LED LXHL-LB5C "Looks White"

I bought a new set of Luxeons from "acme corp" (rather not reveal this
company yet) - and although I am happy with the rest, the most
expensive, $30 Blue LXHL-LB5C shows as white. On my test rig, at very
dim current levels (100-200 mA) it seems like it might have the
slightest teal color - maybe - but higher than that and all the way up
to the rated 700 mA it is white as white cane be.

At this price - how could they sell a blue LED that's white?

I checked the numbering on the back, and it seems to be the advertised
unit:

R5WB 0000058
4202LXHLLB5C

However, the lettering is much thicker than the lettering on the Star
III, and the backing is shiny aluminum. Also the lettering is all
thew way left and the left digits are even slightly clipped. The III
lettering is centered exactly. On the Star III's the backing is
brushed aluminum. So I am a bit suspiscious - however it seems
difficult to re-letter these, and more effort than it is worth. But
to compare, here is one of the III's :

T3J6 0001954
2605LXHLLM3C
LUXEON

Seems odd that the V does not have the word "LUXEON" below the
numbers, but the III's are actually newer than the V's.

They also sell a "Royal Blue" Star V, and perhaps that is the real
blue version. But the color chart shows that wavelength as being very
close to their Blue wavelength. I wonder if this somehow got
switched. I do have a 1-watt Blue Luxeon Star/O LED and it is as blue
as blue can be !!!

White luxeons are just blue luxeons with a phosphor, which fluoresces
white in the blue light. If you look into the lens (with it turned off!)
the phosphor looks yellow.

Sounds like something has got mixed up somewhere.

Suggest you take some really good photos of the thing with your
digital SLR and send them off to Luxeon themselves. I'm guessing you
might have a counterfeit. There is certainly incentive to make such a
thing, but I've not heard of it.

That crossed my mind too. Although I'd hardly expect a counterfeiter to
substitue white for blue.

Agreed, but their quality control might be a bit more suspect than
that of Lumileds.

It's the little things.. like the details of markings on counterfeit
Sony-branded batteries apparently being sold in the Antipodes.
