Autotransformer with hefty capacitors comes to mind but you didn't
specify regulation etc..

how filtered do you want it? :)
the simplest thing that comes to mind is
an adjustable autotransformer into a bridge with
some caps., how ever, getting caps to operate for
half way filtering at 170 volts at 50/60 hz maybe a
problem..
..

Figure 10,000 uF at 200 V to get 10 V ripple if the source has a low
enough resistance and high peak current. 100,000 uF for 1 V ripple.

Maybe if we knew more about the application, there could be some more
useful suggestions.
