logic signal generation

I need to provide and continuously replicate a logic signal that I
will design. This signal will switch at rates of approximately 500
KHz. Any ideas of an efficient way to do this? Are programmable
logic controllers fast enough these days, or do I need to start from
scratch.

I'd think about a CPLD or FPGA either standalone or with a µc, if
nothing special is given for "logic signal".

You might be able to spool it in and out of a uC. If it doesn't have
enough on-board memory you may need an external RAM.
