I am experimenting with a Linear Generator.

I have made a generator based on the shake Torch. This is a tube with a coil round it, and a magnet going backwards and forwards inside the coil. It works ok, but I think there must be a better way to do it.

Is there anyone who knows the best way to make the coils for linear generators?

Take a look at the document "Design of a Linear Generator for Wave Energy Plant, January 2003" (2.1 MB). Skip over the mathematics and there is still a lot of good information on linear generators, especially diagrams for the mating of linear magnetic rotors and stator coils which aren't all that much different than for rotary generators.

Thanks Laplace,

I see they have made their generator square instead round as I have done. I would have thought logically it should be round, I'm sure they know better.

I'm glad you said "Skip the Mathematics" it looses me.

I think a knowledge of mathematics is needed in order to actually make one, as magnets come in certain sizes and the coils need to be made accurately to match the magnets.

Is there anyone out there who understands maths enough to help me make one?
