LED project

Hi all,

I want to hook up some LED's in my daughters doll house. The house has 3 floors and I want to put 3 LED's on each floor. Each floor controlled by a toggle switch and wired in series.

My questions:

1. I want to use 5mm white LED (flat top). How do I calculate how much power I need?
2. How long will the power supply last before dying?
Note: I want the LED's to be powered by batteries rather than AC to DC converter.

Any help would be appreciated, once I figure out everything I need, the next step will be to order parts online, since the closest electronics store is 3 hours away.
Can anyone recommend a link for buying electronic parts.
