LED grid design

I would like to have a grid of LEDs that I could illuminate randomly and also with patterns. My impression of circuit boards is that they don't have the kind of pixelated flexibility of digital computer graphics, but I would still like to try to design a grid of LEDs that I can illuminate with complex patterns. Any suggestions?

Hi Kerberus,

For "random" displaying you can use counters for the row and column driving.
For patterns you must go for a small microcontroller (PIC, ATMEL, ...)

Just use led Matrix as the keyword in place of led grid and google will show you the way.
