Mountain store.

If they really have these things, why doesn't the guy looking for a car
rangefinder use one? i.e., he wants to measure the distance to the car in
front, on the fly.

There was a whole huge thread on what a nightmare it is to design a
Doppler system.

But there really are "laser rangefinders?" Do they work?

They make them for golfers. Check out Bushnell, or search 'laser range
finder golf'

They are commonly used by long-range target shooters,as knowing range is
important to determine ballistic bullet drop.

There are also surplus Russian (military)laser rangefinders on the
market,that IIRC,are not eye-safe,and have greater range because of the
higher power levels used.
