dead?

Thanks guys.

Depends on the manufacture, usually in my experience the screws come loose,
sometimes the plastic cracks, I've fixed them several times.

The name brand manufactures can supply replacement parts. In the past,
I have ordered these (hinges, or other parts) from both Dell and
Toshiba. Depending on the way the unit is constructed, would determine
the complexity of changing them.

Check ebay; dead laptops are frequently parted out and replacement hinges
are available.

What happens when a laptop's hinges break?Well, it depends.

-The screen obviously drops over.

-Varying on model, you might have problems with loose connections

-A small switch to signify "lid shut, go off" may not get activated properly.

I've coped with bad hinges by supporting the screen with a bent piece of metal,
but only on old, old lappies.

It might be worthwhile, depending on the lappie's age, to purchase a "scrap"
one of the same model with a good hinge and top half, but a dead screen and-or
mainboard.
