Is there an alternative to the LM3915 led bar display driver,
which I believe is discontinued ?

Yes there is... a much better idea in my opinion...

Electronics Rainbow makes a dc voltmeter circuit, costs about $7 for a complete kit.

The basic layout is two LM324 quad op amp ics set up as comparators.
The kit comes with the parts and information to set up an LED
    volt meter for 5,8 & 12 volts.

It's not a problem to scale a simple op amp for what ever value
display you might want to try .

Check it out... one of the best circuits going.

    cheers

Somewhere in my archives, I have a schematic for a bargraph that
basically consisted of several LEDs driven by an audio amp.

Each LED had one more diode in series than the previous one.
There may have been a very few other parts, but that was about it.
I'll dig it out if interested.
