Is it ok to use higher voltage caps if the uF rating is the same?

Hi all,

Is it ok to use caps that are a higher voltage than the circuit states
providing that they are the same uF rating?

Thanks in advance.

Generally speaking, yes, not a problem.
For more specialised applications (like say a low ESR capacitor in a
SMPS) you have to be more careful when substituting caps.

the answer is yes
and even a higher uF rating is ok in a lot of apps

** In some cases definitely *** NO*** .

What is your application ?

I'm intending to use the caps in a TV circuit. In the vertical section.

Yes, its common for TV to have values that are boarder line and can be
substituted

ESR is generally a function of case size....

** Huh ??

All the low ESR electos I see advertised are in the same or even smaller
case sizes than their regular counterparts.

Low ESR in a electro is a predominantly function of the electrolyte used -
ie must have very high conductivity.

Sorry Phil, I should have added "for a given electrolyte".

** You should then also add that your comment was **hypothetical**.

You have a very bad habit, Terry of shifting context and moving the
goalposts without TELLING ANY ONE !

So for a given chemistry, if you want less ESR you need a bigger cap.

** Sure - as if WES et alia offer 47 uF, 35 volt electos in a whole bunch
of quite different case sizes.

Like Hell.

"Terry Given" = yet another Kiwi mental defective .......
its not hypothetical at all.

** It was hypothetical to the particular issue YOU were commenting on -
fuckwit .

** You are one, dangerous bloody IDIOT - Terry.

smt & leaded....

** Insanity - pure bloody insanity.

never heard of WES.

** Never heard of reality either.

If you spend $1,000,000 with Hitachi AIC, they will make you any cap you
like.

** Insanity - pure bloody insanity.

Your pet sheep are missing you - Terry.

Baaaaaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.....

Getting old? I guess I must be as in 'my day' electros operated far below
their rated voltage (eg a 16mfd 350vw used in a low voltage point such as
cathode bypass) were said to not form properly - eg not 'achieve' their rated
capacitance. Have things changed?

** What the HELL are you doing with your newsreader ??

The above quotes no poster by name, has no context, looks like it is itself
a quote and moreover reads like a dumb troll.

Maybe "confidential counselling " is just what YOU need.

Well gee Phil, seems like you are getting your little knickers in a knot again
- but I guess you just forgot to read the heading of the post I replied to - if
you read that really really carefully my post makes lots of sense, well at
least to those with common sense and good manners.

Do try to be nice Phil - it doesn't hurt and you wouldn't make such an idiot of
yourself

David - who really doesn't care what Phil writes but enjoys poking him with a
(verbal) stick now and again just for fun

any of it !!

Flys in the face of basic usenet etiquette.

When you post UNDER people's actual words such misconstructions are
avoided.
