Would it cause any harm to connect a 24 volt motor to a 12 volt
battery in order to see if the brushes and everything are ok? I know
it will run slow but could it harm the motor in any way to try it for
a few seconds?

try it for a few seconds?

Overheating is the enemy. A few seconds won't hurt anything.

I wouldnt have thaught underpowering an electric motor would overheat
anything ? does it generate more heat than applying the full voltage ?

The motor will overheat quickly when it stalls.
Two ways to achieve a stall are excessive load at normal voltage or
normal load at low voltage.

The problem would come if the motor didn't have enough oomph to rotate.
A motor which is mechanically stalled is the worst-case condition.
