Is it useful to have a battery trickle charger mounted
under the hood and used at times particularly in very
cold weather.

What are the merits of a trickle charger?

it is good to have the battery kept warm .
trickle charge or ambient temps around it.

It depends on how long the charger would operate. You might want to
check with the battery manufacturer to get a precise answer.
