IR transmitter and receiver

    I got an IR transmitter/receiver pair from Radio Shack. How can you tell
    which is transmiter and which is receiver? One has blueish color; the other

    9v battery with 1k resistor to limit current,
    DMM with diode test mode.

    IR transmitter
    dark one, or take a guess and try combinations.
    apply 9V DC with 1k in series to IR Tr

    IR receiver
    fair one, put DMM in diode mode, resistance mode, connect TR Reciver to DMM,
    take it under a 100W edison bulb, DMM reading reduces with light,
    reverse polarity and see which polarity ohms drop on light, that is right.

    now place IR Tx before IR Rx and change polarity of 9V on IR TX,
    note polarity of IR Tx for which IR Rx DMM reading least.
