switch and a laptop out there to get a picture to look at while I
adjust the camera focus and what ever else might need adjusting?

Depends on the camera. Some have a composite video out jack for just
that purpose. I'd say take the laptop though, you may need it if you
have to do any configuration of the camera's software.

You don't need the switch though, you just need a crossover cable (I
carry one of these: http://ca.kensington.com/html/11632.html) or adapter
(such as http://www.thinkgeek.com/gadgets/tools/7470/).

A crossover cable makes sense. Also if the net has WAPs on it you might ask
if you can connect to the W-LAN with your laptop.
