As usual had nothing of value to contribute!
You started it, you can just live with it!

Go get your nap.... You need it pretty bad.

Hey Oliver,

The heart of most systems is the Phased Array Antenna which allows the
reception of the Satellite Carrier while under way. Unlike a fixed
earth station dish the phased array is a dome with several antenna
arrays distributed to provide an ideal coverage area for the size of
the overall dome. As the aircraft's orientation changes in relation to
the satellite, ideally there are always enough phased antenna elements
to detect the carrier.

In earlier designs a tracking dish inside a dome would move according
to sensor readings on the aircraft that indicated its position,
heading, and Yaw, pitch and roll relative to the target satellite. The
robotics required to do all the servo work was quite an effort and
required a lot of servicing.

Right. Phased array antennas also have the advantage of being flat and
easy to mount. Particularly if aerodynamics are a concern.

A while back, some engineers at Boeing patented some low cost techniques
for implementing phased array antennas. Prior to these developments,
phased arrays were quite expensive devices, requiring high power active
microwave electronics for each emmiter/receiver. The price of these
assemblies placed them out of the reach of reasonable commercial
applications. Try searching patent databases for recent (past 10 years)
developments for phased arrays.

The Soviets also had some interesting phased array designs, based on
passive magnetic phase shifters for each element, rather than
solid-state electronics. After the USSR folded, much of the info. on
this was declassified and some might be lurking out there within the
reach of Google.

One interesting failure of phased array antennas for internet/TV
reception has been in adapting the new low cost units for yachts.
Apparently, the selling point of having a practically invisible flat
antenna instead of those big, ugly domes conflicts with the domes' use
as status symbols. The more big domes and radars the boat has, the
wealthier the owner. (So, put a phased array antenna under a fake dome.
;-)
