Funny, the man from Microsoft said on the news tonight that it wasn't
really such a problem as only a few percent of people had been
affected... and he was still using IE too. So I guess it must be
OK... ;-)

It's not 'Internet Exporer', it's 'Internet Exploder'. :)

All the more reason to run Firefox!

Even stranger... My system is set to automatic update (and I often get them)
so I would have expected an update this morning. But nothing...

Firefox is still good, albeit not as good as it once was.
They're trying to make it all things to all people, which is compromising
it's stability and simplicity.

Opera is highly underrated, IMO.

I've been using Opera for many years. However, I'm stuck at version
9.27 because versions 9.5x are resource hogs. One of the many good
features about Opera is its customisability. For example, you can add
your own functions to the r-click menus. In my case I have added "open
with Firefox" and "open with OffByOne" selections to allow me to open
any URL in an alternative browser. I prefer OffByOne for viewing news
and forum pages that are otherwise overwhelmed by ads, Javascript,
Flash, and other eye candy. OffByOne is extremely fast and launches in
a matter of seconds.

The following quote, from the above URL, is the typical Microsoft
fear mechanism, for the ignorant.

Yeah, I thought that was a really contemptible comment.

Very. A bit OT I know, but how can I determine whether I have the latest
update. Using the About... option under Help just gives me a list of files.
No 'latest update' date or self-explanatory version number

Simply ignore Microsoft, and install a decent system. You can use
Firefox (browser) and Thunderbird (email/news) on at least Mac,
Linux, and Windoze. See mozilla.com.

Google Chrome works well, and it's a much faster browser.

I have been using Firefox for years now
There are no websites I have used that need
IE anymore.

This sort of thing is one of the reasons for the shift, apart
from IE being in the stone age re; features compared to FF

I use Opera except for non-W3C compliant sites which may require IE.

Authors of HTML code that does not conform to W3C standards should be SHOT.http://www.w3.org/

The bizarre thing is that if you contact them and explain that their
web page does not conform to standards, they will tell you that "it
works fine with IE" as if that was the universal standard!!!
Fortunately the companies I have to deal with, like the bank and
credit card companies seem to understand that IE is not the only
"true" web browser.

I have used FF for years also, however too many program launch IE
without your control over it.

I heard more reports that the virus only affects Windozer V7.
