This is brought up off the ``is this a good tv`` thread

I work on all new tv sets where i work ( salvage return store )
In late 03 i noticed panasonic vcr/dvd combos were not pana. inside
anymore .

Just last week i got 2 very expensive Toshiba ... 36`` flat tube set and
a big 52`` big screen to work using an APEX remote

This is certainly disappointing but not a total suprize . I wonder if
this is a result of vacuum crt sets being fazed out in favor for the all
flat panel screens to keep the cost down .

In this case, that doesn't mean that Toshiba sets are made by Apex. It's just
that they happen to use the same remote codes.

Take the cover off of that flat-screen 36 inch Toshiba and of a 36 inch Apex.
The internal differences are still worlds apart.

And, as for using an Apex remote on a Toshiba set, I've known that myself for
some time.

However, quite a few low end Toshiba TV sets have been OEMed by Orion.
I wonder if
this is a result of vacuum crt sets being fazed out in favor for the all

That, or the bigger names, in the case of Panasonic having their VCR/DVD/TV
combos OEMed by someone else, an effort to keep their lower end products
competitive with the underhanded no-names.

As you may already know, a lot of people aren't even aware of differences. All
they care is if it works or not and never think about the stuff internally and
in the long run. - Reinhart

Recently a friend brought me his fairly new Toshiba DVD/VCR combo--a
really nice looking unit on the outside. I opened it up and it was Orion
junk inside. The flimsy DVD tray mechanism was broken beyond repair. I
couldn't believe that Toshiba would actually put their name on such crap.

If they want to be able to sell a 13" TV/VCR combo for $169, they have to.
Actually, I think it is pretty impressive that they can build and sell these
products for this kind of price. I have one of the little 9" TV/DVD funai
units for the car and it has been great for a couple of years. Sure, a lot
of it breaks and is not worth repairing, but they also work pretty well for
what the are.

That one ??? tv-vcr combo i have seen many of with different names on
them .
The vcr has 2 pullys on the right side and a long belt .
This unit was defective , the tape gets stuck .. you have to turn the
belt back by hand & it will work fine a few times . I have found no fix
for these .

I just took apart 2 Toshiba 27 inch sets yesterday and the board lkooed
like Funia or Orion ?? very skimpy with a big cutout .
They both had a shorted Zener in the power supply .

That's Citizen (Jutan)

Can get schematic and parts from citizen, their flybacks are
inexpensive.

I don't mind fixing them, very predictable faults and fewer faults
compared to RCA. oh my.
