I have noise induced hearing loss due to spending too much time in a gun mount in the military. I would like to buy an inexpensive graphic equalizer to hang on my portable radio. EQ should be very small and under $30. Anybody have any experience with these little units?

I had a small one one in a car late 80s , it used lots of power, but
that could ave been the inbuilt amplifier.
I also had a boom box with a 5 band graphic equaliser buit in.

how portable do you need?

You want to build or buy? If you're up to building one, there are all
sorts of simple (and some not-so-simple) tone cone control circuits.
A good one is the Baxendall tone control circuit. It can be made as
either a passive or active circuit. There are also parametric
equalizer circuits. Or you could build something based on the
Phillips TDA-1524A or the Sanyo LA3600.
