Does anyone know where hobbyists can buy industrial computer parts from in
AU? I'm after LCD touchscreens and what not, but I'm not a reseller or

Advantech for one, in Melbourne and Sydney. There are others too, of course,
but I don't have their details handy.

I am going thru the process of sourcing touchscreens at the
moment and can tell you its not easy. This is what I know-
Industrial=expensive. You would think that point-of-sale stuff
is cheap but I've seen quotes of $2000. Sizes smaller than 15
inch are disappearing off the market. LG make a resistive
touchscreen. Apparently not many are available from the
manufacturer like this. Cost me $880 from Computer World.
Model L1510SF. Cheaper alternative, get $400 cheap LCD screen
and fit your own touchscreen from Entech in Adelaide ~$200 for
    USB and drivers.

Why are companies charging so much for LCDs? They're about $150 cost price
for a 14" laptop screen, I've seen the figures in my line of work, where
unfortunately I do not have access to parts.

That is interesting, I did not know they were so cheap. Anyway
does not help much as we still must source them from somewhere
where the laws of supply and demand dominate.

  7. Try the Komtron (ahh, could be jumptech here) sourced LCD's. I think soanar
    distributed them in AU.

Not industrial, but a good deal cheaper.

    Other sellers/manufacturers are

Costs of touchscreens vary according to the manufacturer, and the type
of touchscreen you want, eg, 4 or 5 wire resistive, capacitive, surface
    acoustic wave, etc.

I'm sorry I can't really answer your question but don't worry about
not being a reseller or a manufacturer. You are not building your
gizmo as a hobby you are assembling a prototype. Now you are a
manufacturer. When you get round to ordering you may need to fax them
an order form but that's easy using Word to compose the order,
complete with a suitable letterhead, and a fax modem to send it. If
you want extra decoration on your letterhead you can get a free ABN
    on-line from here
