Saw Silicon Chip had designed one but couldn't look at the circuit on
their site...secret Silicon business no doubt. Anyway just wondering
(as you do) if this is a worthwhile kit. Any alternatives, like get
myself a life and stop building things and spend $80 for a ready made
one etc.

Basically you need switch mode power supply. Take a look at National
Semiconductor's web site.
www.national.com

Look at adjustable switch mode regulators. Datasheet has all the necessary
diagrams to create power supply together with component selection, etc. And
you can order free sample of regulator too.

I can send you the cct if you like, it's pretty simple being based on
the ubiquitous MC34063.

It can supply from 13.8V @ 2A to 24V @ 1.1A, (18V @ 1.5A being about the
mddle of the curve).

That cct has too low an output for most laptops ,..... there was a
upgrade, reduce the series resistor and double the caps for 4 amps.

It on my list too do
