I2C in an automotive environment

    I'm starting a system design for my car that will need an interface
    between each subsystem (alarm and locks, engine control, windows and
    lights, stereo, displays ect...) I chose I2C over RS-485 because it is
    widely accepted and easy to impliment with minimal parts. Has anyone
    tried using it in an automotive environment? I'm concerned there might be
    to much interference causing data transmittion problems.

    Is there maybe a better thread for this question someone knows about?

  2. CAN is popular for that sort of environment. I2C is mostly intended
    for communications between chips on a single board, but the ACCESS bus
    variant attempted to broaden its use.

    You may also want to look into LIN which is a lower cost (and slower) bus
    based on CAN but
    intended for slower and less critical links (like mirrors, locks) where cost
    is more important
    than speed or relability (CAN uses a 2 wire plus gnd redundant signalling
    system, LIN is a
    single wire). It can also be implemented using bit-banging, although either
    Motorola or one
    of the PIC variants (IIRC) has a hardware implememtation.

    I believe there is an interface specifically designed for cars. It's
    called "car area network" or something. Usually abbreviated CAN. I don't
    konw anything else about it, though.
