I am a little lost when it comes to hybrid vehicles. most of them get 40-50
mpg. my 97 geo metro gets 45-60 mpg.what is the deal with hybrid.I cant see
it producing less emissions since they get more mpg. too bad they don't make
the metro anymore.

Actually, your thinking is flawed. More mpg does equal less
emissions. They are more efficient. The big difference is that
nobody would want to ride in a metro, the darned things were just too
small and couldn't get out of their own way. A prius is much larger,
considered a mid-size car I believe, and can definitely get out of its
own way.

In 1982 Datsun made an MPG model of the Datsun 210. It was rated at 50 MPG
and I got 48 MPG with a 1.4L 4 cylinder with 5 speed gear box. Wish I still
had that car. Also Plymouth had a car called the Champ with a twin stick
gear box. It was rated at 52 MPG. My brother in law had one.

Yep, also called the Dodge Colt. They only made the twin stick version for
a year or so. I think my 1980 Champ (5-speed) had an EPA rating of around 40,
and it would happily give you in the high 30's in city driving, with the AC
running. It had a tricked-up engine with three valves per cylinder and an
incredibly complicated carburetor. I put about 150,000 miles on that roller
skate and then it assumed the dreaded duty as my daughter's first car. A few
years later we sold it, having survived the experience and still running fine.
I would happily buy another today. BTW, the Champ/Colt morphed into the
Mitsubishi Mirage, another perfectly good car.

I'm baffled by all the PR for hybrids. My father's 1946 Willeys got 30 mpg
which
is about all GM is claiming for their hybrids. As an interesting aside, I
also read a Popular
Mechanics article from August 1979 where two mechanics put a diesel in a car
and got 83 mpg.

I have Honda Civic (1.2L) 1190 CC and getting around 48MPG with just
4.5litter (1 Imperial Gallon=4.5 litter) I think US Gallon = 4 litter

I have another car Datsun 120Y (1200CC) old 1976 model...damn that car is
still giving me around 50 MPG with 4.5 Litter.

Let me guess, no ac and legroom was fine as long as the rear
passengers were amputees. That's the difference, you're talking tiny
cars and the Prius isn't one.

Ah, no..... actually if you look at the first post, the "Issue" is
about >MPG's< ...... Not how "Comfy" YOU would be in any car.

I too had a few great milage makers.....
Plymouth Champ.... 4Spd... well over 40 highway
80 Honda Civic 4 door... 5Spd. between 40 and 45 highway
81 Honda Prelude - 40-45 highway
GEO Metro. Best I saw was just short of 58......

I too watch people drool over the "new technologies", but I think there
have been plenty of great MPG options out there over the years.

I know people with FULL size older GM cars who hit 30, and then there
is the mid 90's Cadillac Sedan de Ville's that pulled as high as 30 mpg
with a 300HP V8. By comparison, that funky looking little Prius would
need to be getting 90 MPG for me to really be impressed.

Grummy

The Prius is midsized car whose standard equiptment is more than most
cars have with options included. The point of the Prius is any idiot can
get in it, drive in comfort and get twice the average fleet MPG on the
highway and 60 mpg in town.

The Pirus I saw was a two seater, if I remember correctly. I wasn't
impressed.

Then you weren't looking at a prius... You're thinking of something like a
"Smart".

The Prius is a mid sized car that seats 5, you are thinking of the Honda
Insight.

Anyone can make a 50 or even 60 MPG car. The formula is well known. All you
have to do is make the car light enough that a small, gas sipping engine
will run it with enough zip. Unfortunately, when a non-hybrid car is light
enough to get 50+ MPG, you have to give up room and other creature comforts.

Actually, we have the technology to make a light and comfortable car.
Problem is, exotic metals and composites are too expensive. Again, nobody
would buy it.

The VW Jetta was not devoid of "creature comforts" and maintained 50mpg
in mixed driving.

My 91 Geo Metro 1.0-liter, 3-cylinder engine 5-speed got
42 mpg city and 50 hwy But my normal drive to work was 48 mpg
Wish I still had that car with a 50 mile drive to work
Not about to buy a hybrid car just to get to work
and only get 49-51 rated

In A Yugo (sung to the tune "in the ghetto" by elvis presley)
Written by Paul Shanklin

~~as the snow flies
at a used car lot on the edge of town
a liberal guy and a liberal gal
buy a yugo

and they drive with pride

cause if there's one thing this world needs
it's environmental friends who'll take the lead
in a yugo

they say, people dont you understand
those suburbans are ruining the land
but they'll wish they had a full size van one day
they point fingers at you and me
they say we're too blind to see
but do we simply use our heads
and choose another way?

as those small wheels turn
fifty miles to the gallon
and their knees on their chest
they're gonna save enough gas
for all of the rest
in a yugo

then one day on the interstate
they suddenly lose control
they swerve to miss a baby duck
they're squashed beneath a produce truck

but they drove with pride...

and as the crowds drive past a little flat car
you know they saved a lot of gas
but they didnt get far
in a yugo

and as they're trapped inside
at a used car lot on the other side of town
a liberal guy and a liberal gal
buy a yugo....

and they drive with pride...~~
