This scanner has started to produce a streak the length of the scan, but
only in colour. B/W scans are clean.
There is a sample at http://tinyurl.co.uk/5uv9

The lamp appears evenly bright along its length. Any ideas what might be
    causing this problem?

    TIA

The only thing you can do is to check that the ribbon cables and boards are
all connected properly. It is possible that the processor board is not
working right, or the imager pickup is defective, or the ribbon cable is
defective, or something is not seated correctly.

If there is something defective, the scanner would have to be sent to HP for
service. They will not sell you the service parts.

This scanner has started to produce a streak the length of the scan, but
This is typical of a mote of dust or hair in the image sensor assembly...or on
one of the several mirrors. It blocks only 1 or two colors of sensor
pixels...but not the green channel from which B&W is extracted).

Open the scanner and blow it out (carefully) with "DustOff" or equal. DO NOT
let liquid fromt he can impact the mirrors & lenses...it can sand-blast them).
While you're at it, clean the bottom of the glass sheet (Carefully...like it is
a camera lens...meaning: with lens cleaning solution and lens cleaning tissue,
not kleenex and windex...do NOT touch any of the mirrors/lenses with a physical
    object).

Thanks for that. Will attempt cleaning as you suggest.

    Appreciate the response
