These testers supply a high voltage and then check to see if any current flows.

You could use them to test to destruction almost every semiconductor in a stereo.

The only thing you're likely to use it for on a stereo is to check to make sure that there is no conduction between live/neutral and ground (or any user-accessible connections).

If there is, chances are that you might destroy something.

ha ok thanks! It looks like it sends a high voltage test to make sure it is up to safety specs?

why would that damage the equipment - isn't is supposed to be able to handle a certain amount of voltage?

Well, you said you wanted to use it to "test out the circuits" on a stereo.

There are very few of those circuits which could withstand the voltage. What exactly are you wanting to test?

And a pass mark from this type of test doesn't necessarily need to leave the equipment in working condition, it's a safety thing.

Steve is right on on this we had a simular one where i once worked only it was called a insulation break down tester used on high voltare cables went up to 10kv.
