? How to quieten a piezo speaker

    Hi,

    I hope you'll forgive what I guess is a pretty lame question.

    I want to lower the volume from a piezo speaker in the base unit of a
    cordless phone. I can't see any identification on the speaker comopnent;
    all I know is that the unit is powered by a a supply delivering both
    6.5 V DC / 150 mA and 9 V AC / 150 mA.

    I'm assuming (hoping) that I could do something as simple as solder a
    resistor across the speaker's contacts. Is this correct? Or would I wire
    a resistor in series? I'm not interested in being able to vary the
    volume --- I just want to (almost) mute it.

    One thing that concerns me is that I'm assuming that whatever change I
    make will have to be "transparent" to the rest of the circuity --- I
    wouldn't want to do anything that would have weird side effects given
    that the device would be connected to the domestic phone network.

    Any pointers gratefully received.

    A series resistor should work, and is safe.

    Hi Jim,

    Never seen a piezo speaker in a phone. If you mean the buzzer, these are
    usually fed a digital signal at a frequency that is close to the
    resonance of the piezo buzzer. A resistor in series is what can be used
    to muffle that a bit. I have done so in many fax machines, and also a
    phone once.

    Put a piece of tape over it, or stuff in some cotton -- all can be done/undone
    as quickly as you can disassemble/reassemble the phone and have absolutely *no*
    effect on the circuitry.

    Ever been to an Extended Stay America? They're great if you travel
    on business and need to stay for a week or so. Sometimes kids set
    off the fire alarms. There's a piezo in each room, so I put a piece
    of electrical tape over the thing while everyone else stands outside
    to escape the freakin' sonic pain field.
