i am working on a project, i am trying to convert a radio frequency like am/fm to light if that makes sense. The closer the device is to a radio frequency the brighter the light gets, where do i start and what should i look into? What would these parts consist of?

    I suggest you research
    1) RF amplifiers
    2) Rectifiers,detectors
    3) Voltage to current conversion

Any particular radio source or frequency, or just stuff in the environment?

Except in deep space, the strength of a radio signal is not simply related to the distance from the transmitter.

What is it you are trying to do?

    That's a very BIG ask!!
You need to find out what frequency you will be monitoring.
Possibly something like a RF Detector, Bug Sweeping, Wireless CCTV detection etc.
