How can i add a trigger to this circuit to make it not electrocute the user?

Why do you think a 9V circuit will electrocute the user?
Btw, the LEDs should have current-limiting series resistors.

Ok thanks guys for your responses

Alec_t how many ohms should the resistor be?

Herschel i want a trigger for a steady hand game. What metal should i use? Also how can i connect it to it using a breadboard for testing?

Depends on how sensitive the LEDs are and how bright you want them to be. A CD4017 can source only a few mA. A 74HC4017 can sink a higher current. Which one are you using?

2K to 3.6K for the resistor. High out for the chip is about 2 mA at 9 V. The LEDs will probably light okay at that. Since only one LED will be on at any time you could just use one resistor from the common cathode connections to ground.

I still don't get what you want to do for a trigger.

You can get way more than 2mA. The current specified in the datasheet is for the output voltage to be within the valid prior voltage range

Very true, especially if not trying to drive following logic also. But an LED alone to 9 V seems unreliable.

Thanks guys for all your responses!

Herschel Peeler the trigger i want is the actual game, the steady hand game. Like this:

Any stiff wire will do. A clothes hanger will provide what you want.
For a longer length, galvanised steel fencing wire is available. Try a local farmer for an offcut.

This is more difficult. I would use a piece of wooden dowelling or broom stick.
I have the facilities to slit the dowel down and cut a groove in one side, then glue back together. Long drills are available but are expensive and difficult to hold to run down the center.

How far are you from Whatstandwell (Crich)?

Better still have the device sinking current or use a transistor as a drive. At 9 Volts you get about 2.5 mA.. sourced current, not a huge amount for an LED, wont be that bright.

Unfortunately I only live 200 miles away. i can make the handle on my own from local facilities but thanks for the offer.

Guys why is that when i add resistors (as current limiting resistors for the LED's) on the electronics software application, that they don't work?

too little info .... show the circuit and where in the circuit you added the resistor(s)

Don't worry davenn, i believed i worked out the dilemma.
