quantumtangles, a power supply that sounds like a tractor probably has a fan problem. Poke an ice block stick through the fan when it's making the noise, to stop it from turning. If the noise stops, get a new fan.

This thread is about a hissing or sizzling noise that comes from the power supply board itself.

It stopped making the noise the last few days.

Maybe its afraid of being repaired :D

Sometimes a good bash ("percussive maintenance") will stop the fan from making a noise... for a while. Also, changing the angle will do this - try propping the back or front of the machine up slightly so it's not completely level.

Generally I think the problem will reappear with time.

Thanks KrisBlueNZ.

Disappointed it was not a capacitor problem. Rushed out to get freeze spray after reading your clever post. One day I will get to hunt down a bad cap with my new freeze spray :D

LOL :)
Be grateful that it's just the fan. Much simpler to diagnose and replace!

Edit: BTW, my post wasn't clever. That's exactly what freeze spray is used for, in the electronics field. It wasn't my idea!
