Hints about what they are, or what they do, or how to design them, or
how to troubleshoot them? What?

And do you have a specific SMPS topology in mind?

Shouldn't this be covered in books? At least enough so you can
ask questions that will supplement the book, rather than questions
where you seem to be pulling words out that you think you need
to know but there's no context?

There's a whole section of the sci.electronics.repair FAQ,
at http://www.repairfaq.org that might as well be a book on the
subject. Not on design, the site is about repair, but surely you
should be starting with whatever introductory material you can
find.
