Help with noisy neighbor (loud stereo at all times of the day)

Dear sci.electronics.design, I have a noisy neighbor who plays his
stereo at different times in the day. I got no problems with him playing
it during normal hours (noon till 10 pm) but he plays the damn thing at
8 am every few days! I called him, spoke to him, left a letter for him
and it worked for about 3 weeks but now, the loud bass is back.
I don't wanna get the landlord nor police involved, would one of these
do the trick:

- Get a handheld CB with a radio shack CB antenna and power it on when
the loud music starts, would this cause interference for his stereo?

- I read of pre-built FM transmitters, how does one used this to cause
interference (for a short time only, to send the bugger to get his
stereo fixed :-0)

The apartment I'm in is like this:

[me] [staircase] [idiot stereo bass guy]

There is about 10 feet between our walls and I can feel the bass, it is
very loud.

Help me please,

Thanks.

Prob not. Depends. He'd just put a CD in anyway.

That's illegal.
The apartment I'm in is like this:

[me] [staircase] [idiot stereo bass guy]
^^^^^^ grease starting a few steps down. Get some kids to
mess with his car to get him running down the steps. Slip inside
and FUBAR the stereo while he's chasing the little speedsters who
stay just far enough ahead of him to make him think he has a chance
of catching them. Maybe an ambush, too.

That's also illegal, but loads more fun.

You can build a circuit that beeps while he's trying to get to
sleep and when he gets up to look for the source and makes noise,
it shuts off :) That would be fun, too! Get a maintainance man to
put it in the attic with a concealed pinhole for the sound.
There is about 10 feet between our walls and I can feel the bass, it is
very loud.

Help me please,

You may be screwed. 10pm may or may not be the cutoff for noise
laws. I'd think the landlord is the best bet or bail out after
thumping the neighbor's head and 'splain it to the judge. The judge
would be more understanding if you tried other things, first.

I lived in townhouse once where the property manager would beat on
my door if she could hear music through the screen door as she was
walking by. The neighbor gal used to whine to her about the
vibration causing her knickknacks to vibrate off the shelves. I'm
not talking about a lot of volume, either. The bitch is... for some
reason, her husband's thump, thump, thumping on his friggin'
punching bag didn't cause the damn things to walk and yet she
complained about me and my fiance`'s thump, thump, thumping on the
water bed. I never heard them thump, humping, so she was probably
just jealous. Once I got my fiance`'s name on the lease, I didn't
hear that complaint again. :p
Thanks.

I don't remember the subject line, but google has this problem
archived - from this group, too. It was a lengthy discussion and
you'll get a lot out of it.

Sometimes when the law won't work for you and there's a menace
about, vigilantes form. Sometimes they solve the problem with
violence, but with a little thought, you could get all his friends
turned against him and lots of other little problems cropping up
like magazine subscriptions, get the clerk at the store to say his
card declined, "bill collectors" calling, whatever. Talk to him
again and remind him that what comes around goes around so that
when things go south for him, maybe he'll think.

Doom on Dickhead.

The best way is to train your noisy neighbour over a (shortish) period of
time.

A very simple system consisting of a 12 inch speaker for the microphone, and
a Piezo alarm horn for the speaker.

The speaker makes a great mic, and super duper low pass filter. You need a
small amplifier, a comparator cct., and a solid state relay to drive the
piezo (in-built) electronics.

In use, the 12 inch speaker is positioned to give best pickup of the
offending stereo, and the amplifier and comparator adjusted to produce tone
busts from the piezo. You can use a lamp when testing. You may need to
separate the horn and "mic" some yards to prevent feedback.
So, each time the offending stereo exceeds the limit you have set, your
neighbour will get a squawk. You can adjust the output of the piezo horn
with pillows. He will quickly learn that lowering the volume will stop the
squawk. You can then turn up your gains a little to make him turn his down
yet more.
Works a treat. It has been found that it is better to leave this device on
24/7. It is amazing just how many of your neighbours will appreciate the
return of peace.

Bill.

P.S. Also very effective if you have clog dancers living above you.

My brother used to suffer from a neighbour who used to start playing his
loud music at around midnight and finish around 2 a.m. He tried the
polite approach, but to no effect.

So he set his alarm clock for 5 a.m. then took out a hammer drill and
drilled three or four holes in the intervening wall (not all the way
through). After three days the late night music stopped. A bit of
plaster and some paint and everything was as good as new. It might work
for you.

LOL

My Army room mate in Germany used to go downstairs (being a small
unit we shared a barracks with a unit of idiots) with a baseball
bat and wail on the solid wood door of the offending troops.

If its an apartment there is usually a central main fuse box
downstairs - or atleast there is where i live - go in, turn it off,
through the fuse into the nearest bushes and go back inside... :)

FreebsdOp

When you subsidize behavior, you get more of it;
when you punish behavior, you get less of it.

DO get the police involved as soon as possible.
Get a copy of the incident report from the cop
(includes the time, a description of the problem, and the cop's badge#).

Having a collection of these in hand,
after the nth incident (3rd strike ?) have the jerk arrested
and show up in court (with the evidence) to testify.
From experience: The longer you tolerate this behavior,
the greater number of people who will acccept it as "normal"
and the greater number of people who will imitate it.

Immediately after having him arrested, have the landlord evict him.
Having neighbors who are also irritated
and who will band with you against the jerk is a plus.
(Mothers with small children are especially sensitive to this.)

The only easy alternative is an automated sleep-deprivation method
(timer that activates a noise source at intervals in the wee hours).
How you keep it from also waking you and others up is the problem.

No. Wail as in wail on someone's head, door, etc. It's an
Americanism.

Indeed, but I've only seen it spelt 'whale'. My very ancient Webster
doesn't give either. Chambers, however, gives 'whale' with that meaning
without labelling it US English.

No. Wail as in wail on someone's head, door, etc. It's an

M-W has the following entry:

Main Entry: 3whale
Function: transitive verb
Inflected Form(s): whaled; whal·ing
Etymology: origin unknown
1 : LASH, THRASH
2 : to strike or hit vigorously
3 : to defeat soundly

But no comparable meaning for "wail". Despite that, Google indicates
(with only a very small sample, I might add) that it's more often
misspelt than not.

OED1 shows it dating from 1790, and speculates it may have come from
thrashing with a whalebone whip.

Now, should it be "whaleing" or "whaling"? ;-)

I don't see any need for the 'e'.

Ok. My mistake. I figured "wail" as in "scream" or "cry" both being
action verbs, but that whipped with a whale bone explaination makes
sense. Chaulk up another for you for enriching my vocab :) You did
provide the final def, after all.

Wow, tons of replies, thank you all very much. My original post was to get
an idea of the tricks I could use to give back to the idiot noise maker what
he is giving out unwanted.
Another thing thta makes this difficult is that I'm a noob at electronics
(not computers though :)
If there would be a way (if yes, please explain it in noob terms, with
pictures and radio shack part #'s would be superb) to just interfere with
the stereo reception. I did hear the radio announce it's label, 102.9 FM.
Would such an idea work with a small fm transmitter and a radio shack cb
antenna cause enough interference to mess him up bad? I did ask this in the
original post and didn't see any replies except to not do it :-(
BTW, I would run that device ONLY when bothered, that should teach the
bass-freak!

Thanks a bunch,

An illegal FM-band radio microphone tuned to 102.9 might well pick up
enough of the noise to create a feedback loop. That should be
interesting. If he asks you about the screeching, tell him some cock-
and-bull technical waffle and say that if he keeps the volume turned
down a bit, it won't happen, which will be true.

Forget the wimpy and ineffective FM stuff- underpowered advice. Install
X-10 remote control to contactor in-line with his mains feed and shut
him down for 10 seconds when the music comes on. Camouflage the
contactor assembly as lightning suppresser.
