In fact a quick search shows that most US hammer suppliers spell it pein.

It is also referred as peen in "shot peening" which is practically
universal.

The action is to peen, so why would the device be called a pein?

That hammer maker may be in the US but the dope is of brit origin.

The ORIGINAL etymology of the term is, however, PEEN. so why argue
about it?
