Hi, I'm creating a small 10 inch cardboard garage that will lift straight up. I realize that I need the connect the top of the garage to the dc motor with a small piece of wire or string, but I do not want the dc motor to keep reeling the garage up, I need it to stop at a certain point. I also need the dc motor to go in reverse and let down the garage to the ground at the rate of about 1 inch per sec. I am a bit confused as of the best way to stop the garage at a desired point, and letting it down. The garage can go straight up. Any help would be appreciated

    1. Use a microswitch which is activated when the garage is at its top limit.
Use another microswitch to be activated when the garage is down.

    2. Use a Hall effect device to sense the presence of a magnet which is fixed to the garage.

I will have to think about a suitable circuit.
