Would appreciate any assistance in diagnosing and servicing the
following problem on a Panasonic TH-37PWD5 plasma display:

black, vertical band 1" wide appears middle of screen all sources/all
inputs, all of the time. Recommendations of any local servicers
(Boston area), links to appropriate web sites, newsgroups or other
help sought. Thank you.

This is a type of technology that you would not be able to service at
the component level without the proper factory diagnostics, equipment,
and detailed design information at both the software, and hardware
levels. The only thing a field service tech can do is to look for
something simple like a cold solder connection, or a loose connection.

The service departments will service these at the modular or board level
only for about 95% of the faults. They will have the proper set-ups, and
follow the factory set-ups to calibrate the changed boards if necessary.

I would strongly suggest to have the set properly serviced by one of the
authorized service centres for your type of set. If you go in to it
yourself, the results may be much more expensive to correct afterwards.

Many of the authorized service companies should be able to address this on
site rather than transporting the item to their facility. These are all
considered "Board Level" serviceable. Call Panasonic directly and they will
refer you to an authorized service facility in the Greater Boston Area.
