Hello all!

My name's Chris, I'm from Melbourne, Australia.

I've just started a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, coming to the end of my first semester, and loving it! Currently doing basic circuit analysis and digital system design. Really starting to develop a passion for electronics, it's pretty exciting.

I already have my Master's degree in Science, specialising in Physics. My thesis involved looking for the Higgs Boson, if anyone knows what that is... If anyone's interested, feel free to ask :)

Wanted to get into a field that's more applied, and crossed over with my physics background - electrical engineering was perfect! And like I said, I'm loving it so far.

Already have three basic projects lined up (PC fan controller, pocket amplifier and a sig gen), and am looking forward to building them and learning as much as I can about electronics :D

I've bought a breadboard and a beginner kit of components, and I'm ready to go!

What is the Higgs Boson? I'd google it but you told me to ask so I'll let you explain :)

Whoa, that was fast! Haha, well I guess I must oblige then!

So the field of particle physics aims to describe all the fundamental particles that make up matter, as well as working out the forces between them. Our current theory describes a bunch of fundamental particles that interact via four different forces, and the theory lines up pretty well with the data.

However, there's one piece missing, one particle we haven't seen in our detectors yet - the Higgs Boson, which turns out to be pretty important in the scheme of things. So, we want to see if our theory of the universe is correct by trying to find this particle with new experiments.

That's the short answer I guess, but my love of science and physics definitely fuels my new foray into electronics :)

Sounds like you're searching for a needle in a haystack! Good luck to ya and hope we can be of help, I've only been on the forum a short while but I've gotten some tremendous help!

That's one of the most accurate ways of describing it, actually, haha!

My analysis code searched through over 6 million pieces of data, and only identified four events that could be from a Higgs boson (which is expected, it's a very rare particle).

But the dataset gets bigger and bigger every day, the common wisdom is that it'll be largely decided by the end of this year, which is exciting :)

But thanks for the welcome, and I look forward to posting about my first project! :D

Higgs-Boson

Awesome! Sounds like you're our inside track to news on the subject. Exited to see what comes of it. Are you continuing your physics work while you study electronics?

I'm not continuing my work as such, though I'm keeping a close eye on the relevant sources of information. Trouble is, now that I'm not a physics student any more, I don't have access to the database of all the latest unpublished and unconfirmed results, so I have to wait for it all to be published like everyone else! I was used to knowing the latest results a few weeks in advance :p

Though I'm going to visit my old officemates soon, I'll get them to clue me in! :)

I'm always interested in physics discovery specially Higgs boson (particles physics) which they say will re-discovered physics if this is found and quantum physics.. glad to hear you in this forum.

Hey adfa4c and rexreo7!

I love physics, but I'm also loving my new electrical engineering degree! :)

Keep your eyes open for news reports about the Higgs, we're pretty close to finding it, or ruling out its existence! We should have a good idea in a few months! :)
