I'm a physics student working in an ultrafast laser lab at a university. We're interested in building a spatial light modulator (SLM) to shape our laser pulses. Commercial SLM's can cost over 100k, so we want to build our own using a recycled LCD projector.

All we need to do is take out the lens, mirrors, fans and lamp of a projector while leaving the electronics and the LCD displays functional. We tried doing this with an old Infocus LP1000: the fan interlock wasn't a problem, but the lamp interlock was a lot harder to defeat. Long story short, the projector burned out.

So I'm asking for help in one of two forms:

1) How to defeat the lamp interlock on the Infocus LP1000 (we can buy another one; they are cheap)

2) What other projector (preferably old and cheap) would be more amenable to our tinkering.

I don't know if this type of question is within your domain of expertise, but any help is appreciated.
