Hi

Can anyone help? I own a 36inch Sony widescreen tv, and a Pioneer 565A
dvd player.

When I play a dvd on the tv, a ghostly vertical strip runs constantly
from the right to the left of the screen. It makes watching dvds very
hard as it is so distracting.

I have tried a different dvd player, but the same thing happens.

I have tried using s video and scart, but both produce the same
problem. It seem that the problem lies in how my tv is dealing with
the dvd signal. It looks like some kind of interference, but how could
this be?

I would be very grateful for any suggestions, as I am really at my
wit's end as to what it could be. I should mention that these ghostly
lines do not appear on my picture for sky tv, or video consoles, or
terrestrial tv pictures.

TIA

Internally, in the circuit that switches the signal sources there may not be
proper isolation. You may be seeing the sync signals from the DVD video and
some other video crossing a bit. The result would be that you are seeing the
free running of the sync pulses from the other video source that is entering
the set. This is knows as cross-talk if this is the fault that your set
actually has.

Some of the causes are a cold solder connection to the reference ground
point for the video, defective components(s) such as maybe the main input
switching IC, the input isolation amplifier stage, or anything else along
the path of the input processing of the video.

A TV tech would be able to find this by scoping through, and looking at the
waveforms to see where the signal leakage or crossing is occurring. Then he
would be able to troubleshoot for the defective parts.

You can also try to disconnect everything else from the TV set including the
cable, and only have the DVD player connected. You will most likely not see
this effect anymore, thus proving that this is an input cross-talk problem.
If you see very faint snow in the background this would be the tuner section
that is crossing through.

Jerry,

Many thanks for your detailed and most thoughtful response.

I tried what you suggested, that is, remove all inputs except the dvd
one. However, the ghostly white line still flits across the screen. :(

It is time I got an expert out to have a look?

TIA,

Godfrey
