  1. I'm interested in getting started in PV's -perhaps to do something as simple
as charging AA or D type batteries learn a bit more. I've looked
through eBay and the like, and there are loads of AA PV systems, as well as
some cheap 12V systems with larger panels. I guess the all in one AA Exide
type solution is cheap, and will do the job, abut I'm not sure I'll learn
much. whereas a heath robinson approach migh help me gain some more

Would it make sense to buy a cheap12v system, and run a regulator to give me
the lower voltages? -this would give me some options in the future (eg
encourage me to pick up a car battery to attempt to put a small charge in
it, and perhaps lead me on to buying a bigger panel etc) might also help me
to learn about the C/10 type things I keep hearing :)

Is this a sensible approach? Anyone else doing this? Would the type of
regulator you can get for a cigar lighter socket be suitable?
Views/suggestions welcome. I'm UK based, and I think my budget is around 30
pounds tops to start me off.
