personally, I wish everyone would sign their posts with their first name

its a mixture of my first name and the first and last letters of my last name ... nn ... Nelson
Am married ( second time around) and am 55 yo

I'm an electronics tech, always have been in one form or another since leaving school
did my time with the New Zealand Post Office, now Telecom NZ. 1000's of us lost our jobs in 1989
when the Govt sold off a large share of the various govt departments and corporatised them.
done the TV and computer servicing thing as a private home business. had times with various audio/video companies. Currently working for a company that sells Trimble GPS and machine control systems for surveying, construction and mining industries

Well my story is not that long.

I am 30yo also married and got 2 little boys (minimum free time lol). My grandfather was a skillful electronics technician, my father also was good with electronics.
I have studied electronics at highscool but i never had the chance go deep enough. I know the very basics of electronics. I work as electronics technician on ships and i do electronics at home as a hobby. Most of the repairs i do are out of experience rather than knowledge.

That was the condensed version haha

that's cool ... what specific ship bourne electronics do you work on ?
    maybe everything and anything ?
maybe communications and radar specialty ?

Bravo my good fellow! Now we can restart as comrades/compatriots! :D I will speak to you in Greek and if you have the time, can you correct my mistakes. I don't know a lot about electronics, but I, like you, want to learn. And with the help of all here, I try to make small projects.

Merry Christmas, Happy Name Day (my mistake I thought he was Constantio whose name day is Dec 26) and Happy New Year. In Hellenic culture, name days are bigger than birth days.

    Merry Christmas everyone (again)!

It's midday on the 25th here. I'm with my partner Donna today. We're going to have Christmas dinner tonight at the house of her older daughter, who will soon be marrying her partner of many years, who is a truly excellent guy. They already have a little girl and their own house!

I can smell roast meat from the neighbours' houses already! It's been very hot here lately (southern hemisphere summer), but today is overcast so that's a welcome relief.

I've been interested in electronics since a young age. My father was a hi-fi guy - old valve amplifiers, classical music, that sort of thing - so he knew a bit about electronics, and we worked on his gear together! I taught myself from magazines like Everyday Electronics (English) and ETI (Australian), mostly.

I got an apprenticeship with a consumer electronics repair company, where I got my only formal training - in repairing TV sets, mainly :-( Then a friend of mine got me into a job doing embedded systems development - firmware initially, then hardware when the previous hardware guy left. I learnt a lot from online magazines, application notes, and experimentation. It was a small company, so I did the whole hardware development thing, from circuit design and PCB layout through to workshop test procedures and jigs. It was a great job.

I left in 2009 after some medical problems and I haven't had a full-time job since, but let's not dwell on that :) I get a lot of enjoyment from Electronics Point - some threads more than others... It's a great opportunity to share my experience, such that it is, and to learn about new stuff as well.

When I'm more financial, I hope to get into some modern pre-rolled products like Raspberry Pi, and maybe get into some FPGA stuff. We considered the Altera NIOS embedded processor at my job and I liked it. There are so many opportunities around nowadays for making cool things, and I also want to be able to answer questions on those subjects.

I hope everyone has a great time this festive season, catching up with family, getting drunk if that's your thing, or not if it isn't, and just generally relaxing and enjoying the company :) And not spending too much time on the computer... Donna's orders!

ok time to add my 2 bits.
I am Phil. I am the very proud father of a 10 month old girl and the step father of 2 beautiful young ladies 19 and 21 years. I have a step grandson and am only 33.
I am very stubborn and stuck in my ways, but have always thought that through science we will be able to discover the basics of life in our universe. I find that the medium for this has become electronics and this is why I like dabbling. I am slightly weird (I like to say slightly but know its way beyond that). I come up with weird concepts and usually get on here to get people to show me why it doesn't work lol
I consider myself intelligent but when compared to the people on here who have worked in electronics for many years or other fields I know I am just learning. I know enough to understand concepts.
My ultimate goal is to make something think. that sounds harder than it is I hope. I believe all of our creative ideas come through a basic thought process that is taught to us and some delivered through DNA. so if I can program some basics into a computer and make it do something I didn't program is that not a self reliant thought?
lately with the use of Arduino, Raspberry Pi and people like the ones on this forum I see we are sitting on the edge of either something truly magnificent or scary...... I say bring on the terminators LMAO.
I love seeing things for how they are just complex machines working wonderfully together to create our all. with luck we can end up like bicentennial man and have the opportunity to replace our basic parts with something a little more durable
I really want my daughter to grow up in a world where she has the ability to do what she wants, not worry that the world has been over farmed etc. and hopefully we can make a truly wonderful place where basic machines will do simple things for us and allow us all to pursue our goals without limit. like the guy that put a radio in the alarm clock I think blending technologies will be truly great.
oh and last but not least I have always wanted to go to space to be truly inspired by the majesty of the heavens but with a recent issue with pericarditis I am losing faith I will be the one that discovers that truly magnificent spectacle.
as you can see I dabble and dream and use capital letters very loosely. I love beyond life and really wish to see the greatness in people.....
    too much? lol

Hi all, My name is John, I am 55 years old. I started with electronic in the 10 grade in high school, Took Instrumentation for 2 years at a Vo-Tech school and was hired as a repairman (jack of all trades) at a cogeneration plant in Baton Rouge, Louisianna, USA 36 years ago. I am very blessed, I have been married to a great wife for over 30 years that I would not trade her for anything. I also have a great daughter who is 26 years old and is fixing to get married. We have 4 rescued dogs. I love anything old. I am not much into the technoligy of today but I do like to revive 70's audio equipment. I like to fish, motorcycles, 70's vehicles, any type of older R/C models Rock music, spending time with my wife. For me there is not enough time in the day. Looking forward to retirement in the next few years.

    My turn !

i'm 47 from Edmonton, Alberta (western part of Canada). I'm originally from Quebec (eastern part), therefore french is my native language. Married w/2 kids (18 & 15)

I have a diploma as Electronic technician, but never really worked in electronic. I also have a diploma as instrumentation mechanics, but haven't worked as such for over 15 yrs.

I am currently employed by Rockwell Automation as a Control System Architect: designing automation solution for end user.

Other than that, I'm into 3D printing, laser cutting, CNC'ing, PCB making, uCTRL, etc... if something can be built, I can probably build it !!

My latest projects are for the paintball/airsoft industry. I have build a couple of game accessories such as the Boombox: it's a fake bomb that need to be disarmed by flipping 2 keys OR typing the right code OR cutting the right wire. Sold 7 units so far.

Completed some items other like timers, scoreboard, target system....

I'm always working on 3-4 project at a time: my "day job" is my main obstacle into completing them fast enough. !

I'm also a mentor for a local FIRST robotic team.

U.S. Navy was my first "big" job - Aviation Ground Support Electrician, then I worked under my older bothers and my father doing commercial and residential mechanical and electrical drafting & design as well as energy auditing for about 15 years, with crossover to HVAC for about 20 years, with crossover to Personal Computers & networking for 15 years, with crossover to commercial construction inspection & management for 5 years, then motorcycle restoration biz for 8 years, now back to paychecks in surveillance & access systems with a lot of structured cabling (copper & fiber).

Needless to say, I ride motorcycles, I have a collection of mostly classic British bikes (Triumph, Norton & BSA), with some unique Japanese bikes and the odd Italian (Moto Guzzi). My wyfe also rides; in fact, she's done everything I've done for over 30 years, including camping, fishing, skydiving, SCUBA diving, water skiing, and raising a family of 5 kids and now 18 grandkids. She worked with me for over 15 years in the HVAC & computer businesses, but has been taking care of the house & kids for about 15 years now.

We have at home a 9-year-old daughter, and a 4-year-old son who keep us VERY busy.

We live many miles from civilization at the southern end of I-35 in Laredo, Texas, right on the Mexico border. No, it's not dangerous here. Our home is within about 150 acres of family-owned property with a private driveway about 1/2 mile long (perfect for motorcycles) and a fishing pond. We have lots of wildlife including deer, racoons, javalinas, a pair of Osprey (fish hawks), ducks, and a huge flock of PELICANS a couple of weeks ago (just passing through).

I do not use emoticons, but play well with others.
