GE SFLA Circuit breakers

    Just wondering if anyone has come across this before.

    We installed a 300A 277/480V, 3-phase, 4W service in a building in
    2000. The distribuition section is a GE Spectra series board.
    In this boad, we have several circuit breakers among which are 200A
    SFLA C/B's. (250A frame w/ 200A trip unit)
    These breakers feed various panels and transformers with the highest
    load being 160A for a panel feeding battery chargers.

    (10) of these 200A SFLA c/b's have what looks like burning or
    corrosion arount the trip rest button and the trip unit.

    We are trying to find out what could be causing this.
    The other c/b's in the board are fine (both larger and smaller Amp
    c/b's)

    I found an alert regarding GE c/b's and trip units online, but this
    alert does not appear to cover this type of breaker and the time
    period in question.

    Does anyone have ideas as to the possible cause or a good source where
    any reported problems might be posted?

    I checked the GE site for any info without any success.

    We took digital pics and sent them along to GE. Hopefully they will
    send a rep out without too much phone tag. Pictures of the bussing and
    breaker connections clearly show everything is fine (No discoloration
    whatsoever).
    I was just wondering if anyone has seen/heard of this type of thing
    before.
    Thanks for the response, I'll post the results when this gets worked
    out.

    yes, I have but not with GE.

    I would calling the folks that I purchaced them from. I would be asking for
    new product including installation/down time. I know all of the OEM's terms
    of sale are parts only. I have seen SQD and CH both install defective
    equipment free of charge and offer an extended warranty.

    Force the seller to do his job. If your any sized customer at all. the
    seller can get GE engineering services out there asap. GE does have someone
    in almost every major market.

    SCREAM loudly and often. Call the GE sales group locally and demand help.
    The sales office can handle the problem in a twinkling of an eye, if they
    are prompted. Stop or put on hold all GE purchaces. Let the sales guys
    know why.

    I worked for an OEM as a feild engineer for quite awhile. I was once sent to
    New Mexico from AZ to fix some breakers for a OEM manufacture. I got to
    BumF--K New Mexico during the second day of traveling. The customer, had
    shipped the breakers in the intermediate position instead of out of the
    cells or latched against the bus. The part that broke was a 1/4-20 bolt of a
    special design. The whole thing was taken care by warrantee even though the
    equipment was 10 years old and it was the customers fault. I had two days of
    wandering around fishing and taking pictures. Where I was FEDEX over night
    was 2-3 days.
