    This is something I cooked up in Ltspice using a MOSFET.

    Never have tried this config but I think it'll work as shown here.

    alt-click on M1 to get power, ctrl-click waveform name to get average
    of window

    M1 dissipates ~15W average ....

    true, that was a simple example of using a MOSFET in a linear state, I
    wasn't trying for a switch state. I was trying to keep the part count
    down to an all time low and show that if you remove the load the line
    usage's of power becomes very low which is something that does not
    happen with a simple shunt type.

    As for the switching, a simple hysteresis can be applied that would
    force the fet into full on. Actually, my pick of the FEt has a lot to do
    with the 15W you are seeing, I did picked on from the list that had a
    high Vds to it for the example, I don't even know what the Rds(On) value
    even is..

    That was something I just pulled out of my head.
