Seeking the august opinions of the gurus out there in cyberspace...

Situation:
Doorbell that doesn't ring loud enough to notify folks in basement nor in
master bedroom. Strange night incursions across private property, gate left
open to back yard, noisy neighbors across the road. Deliveries are left on
porch. Occupants are often engrossed in computer work, oblivious to the
outdoors.

Remedy sought:
[] Doorbell / motion detector linked to PC; software to "ping" users on LAN.
[] 3 - 4 Low cost B/W cameras aimed at front door, back yard, and corridor
that suspected trespassers are using; software to switch and DVR function
[] Audio input on Camera at front door; link sound with video
[] Speaker output at front door
[] PC PCI interface card, output to VCR
[] Software to run it all

Any other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks for your help and assistance

P.S. Am I right to presume wired cameras are superior to wireless cameras?

Much simpler suggestion:
At Home Depot (and probably other places) they have wireless doorbells,
both battery operated and AC operated (plugs in like a wall wart)
models. There is also a transmitter that you wire to the existing bell
which sounds the remote bell(s) when the original is rung. Put multiple
remote bells whereever needed.

The ones I saw were made by Heath-Zenith.

You can solve most of the issues with one or two X10 SC546A Remote Chimes,
a TM751 transceiver and one X10 motion sensor. A computer is not needed.
Additional motion sensors can be added at locations that may
need to be monitored. You can purchase a Lamp or Appliance module to turn
on a lamp at less cost than the Remote Chime.

You can spend several hundred dollars and make a hobby of the activity
or purchase a minimum number of items needed for monitoring a front door
for less than $50.

I don't think you can find a solution for noisy neighbors.

Do X10 modules use house wiring to communicate?
A computer is not needed.

Are there any modules that connect to an existing doorbell circuit to
activate chime?

I don't think you can find a solution for noisy neighbors.

Just need to record evidence with time stamp to make a complaint to the
local gendarmes. Maybe I should just make a videotape and send it to the
local newsmedia.

i do have a solution but it need to be used wisely..
i did used that when i was living in a pretty tough neighborhood..

i had a smal pellet gun ( the one that you pry in half to pump it..have a
good aim at around 200 feet max)
and whenever the damn clowns were making a party or being plain asshole at
night i would slowly open a window in my room (no lights on) and shoot a
pellet or two..

was aiming at windows or cars...but always to a place were the mark could
have been done by a projectile from a lot of angle..
they never catched me, and you can be sure that the noise was going down a
few minute later when every one was now inside...
or music was lowered ...

cops came a few times...started asking question but what was amusing is that
when they did came most poeple around were going out to tell the cops that
the clowns were making a lot of noise....

I had to do it a few times, but after about 6 month i never had to used it
again..
i was living in a 3 floor house with 2 appt on every floor...there was no
way they could find me,unless they would have seen the pellet gun,but it was
all black...

hope it will help...

If you are offended, why bother putting in your 2 cents?

Now, I have to raise your 2 cents...

[] Doorbell

One solution:
Plug-In Extend-A-Chime Model RC3200 $40 - $50
Extension chime $25 - $35

" The Plug-In Extend-A-Chime expands an existing wired doorbell to be
heard in any part of the home. The transmitter connects onto the
low-voltage screws in the existing doorbell. Plug the doorbell receiver
into any 110V electrical outlet. Hear the doorbell in all parts of the
home-basement, second floor, or the attic. "

I needed 3 ring detectors from ELK and end up with 6 doorbell detectors as
part of the package. They now seem even more useless.
Neat trick, thanks for sharing.
