Over a period of years, our flippers now greatly outnumber the operating TVs
    in the house.

The question is: are flippers "mated" to a certain TV, or is a flipper just
    a flipper?

If there's a mating ritual involved, is it something simple the homeowner
    can do?

Obviously this is leading to a traumatic decision of tossing the extra
    flippers out, maybe.

  2. I'm presuming you are referring to remote controls. If so, generally the
ones that come with an appliance are made for that one specifically.
However, there are lots of "generic" ones out there that can be programmed
to match the codes for a particular device.

If you find you have "specific only" ones that haven't had leaking
batteries, and as far as you know are still in working order, you might try
to eBay them rather than tossing. I have heard of several instances where
somebody's remote got run over/crushed in the recliner/dog ate, etc. and the
generics don't have all the functions of the OE one that came with it.

"they call him Flipper, Flipper, faster then liiiightning...."

sorrry, i just had to do that.

pull the batterys out an use the ones that are not dead or corroded in your
    mini-flashlights.

would you believe that my new CAR stereo came with one of those things?

They're specific to the equipment they came with, though some will work with
a variety of models. A few for higher end TV's can be worth some $$, I'd pay
$75 for an original remote for my Sony XBR right now. If you don't have the
equipment the remote came with, you could always donate it to charity, most
thrift stores have a bin of them, so far I've never found the few I'm
    looking for though.

Oh yeah, they do have some hobbiest value as well.

I have had Xmas tree lights come with a remote control. Even had some
computer speakers come with them too.

James, get Sony LCD remote - there are tons on ebay in ~$100 range. It will
control all Sony equipment without programming and many more things with
programming. I am so sorry that I sold mine a couple of years ago.
