Hello,

My mom has a 13" Daewood tv that she bought in '98 or so and has kept
on almost 24/7 ever since.

Recently she woke up to find that while the sound is working fine, the
picture is almost or usually totally gone (black).

Sometimes while tuned to NBC/Channel 6 there are traces and outlines of
an image where I can sort of make out that it is Jay Leno, or the local
newscaster. She doesn't believe she did anything like turn the
brightness down too far (though the screen is too dark for me to
check). Moving the rabbit ears doesn't seem to do much except make
Channel 6 slightly clearer.

I believe the tv originally cost $100. We can totally afford a new
one, but like to save money when practical.

What might be wrong with the picture? How might I get it fixed and is
it worth our time to do so, (and how much would we really save?) or
should I just get a new one at Best Buy... ?
Thanks for your time!

What happens if you crank it way up?

first you need to be absolutely certain about the brightness setting.

then, you may need to check if altering the screen control on the line
transformer has any effect - this could be a dirty contact. If the pic
comes and goes, it may be the heater connection to the tube neck board
needs resoldering - this will need care and you will need to know how
to solder.
In any case, see www.repairfaq.org if you want to know more, or just
take the set to a repair outlet for a quote. It sounds repairable to
me.

First of all, by the way your are asking, you should practice good
safety and not venture in to the set. There are some very serious safety
issues when working in TV sets.

TV service requires a fair amount of knowledge, and troubleshooting
skills. There are also some specialized tools required in order to do
the proper work. There is also the aspect of sourcing the parts, and
purchasing the service manuals if required.

You have two choices here.

1) Toss the set and get a new one.
2) Get an estimate to have the set repaired.

The cost of the estimate may come out to at least 40% of the cost of a
new low cost set like the one you have. In any case, if you were to
start replacing parts in that set, you will easily approach the cost of
a new one anyways. In other words, your set is a "throw-away", as all
these low cost sets are.

So, I would guess you have something to do this weekend. It is called,
"shopping for a new TV set".

Could be a capacitor in the power supply, is the heater in the neck of the
tube gloing normally? Daewoo anything is a piece of crap, it's not worth
spending much time on it.
