Did you try cleaning the objective lens?

Sometimes, the CD player section of these shelf-systems can collect dust, which
can cause playability problems.

Take a can of compressed air and carefully airblast the pickup, then finish
with gently wiping the lens clean with a soft swab with one end lightly
dampened with water, then gently rub dry with the dry end of the swab. -
