finding obsolete components??

I am repairing a laser power supply that was made in 1978 and can only
manage to find exact replacement components for 60% of the parts (diodes,
transistors, etc...). Is there some magic resource somewhere that allows
one to find current equivalents to discontinued parts? How is this
generally done?

Thanks,
Bob

Well, first thing is getting all of the part numbers listed here
Google can also be your friend.

Parts I am looking for:

zener diode 1N3024
Diode ST1160P (high current ~ 40A)
Diode ST460P (~40A)

Newark had a good selection and I found many of the parts there. The parts
that are listed I have been unable to find.

Thanks,
Bob

Find the specs on the diodes and substitute something similar, diodes are
probably the easiest semiconductor out there to sub, there's probably
literally dozens if not hundreds of different parts that would work just
fine for you.

Google turns up many hits. It took me about 30 seconds to find the
datasheet for the zener. It's likely these can be replaced with
common parts.

Information Unlimited is mostly a junk shop, they specialize in poorly
photocopied "plans" for all sorts of goofy stuff. I suggest forget them and
go straight to the experts on alt.lasers if you have a particular problem
with a laser.

You need to be more specific on what types of parts you are looking to
find, because you would need much more information than is practical here.
