filter reactor

I had a buddy of mine bring over a tattoo machine power supply that was on
the blink. I opened it up and found a 36vac transformer, a bridge rectifier,
two 1000uf caps, a 5 watt wirewound pot and a "filter reactor".... What the
heck is a "filter reactor"??? It was run in series with the output negative
post to the tattoo machine and looked like a big transformer, only with two
wires. One wire in and the other out to the tattoo machine...... Never did
fix the thing, primary transformer was shot....

Any guess????

Sounds like an inductor (choke). Is this machine maybe 50 years old?

I'm not experienced with tattoo machines but it seems to be a large
inductance to keep the current quasi constant regardless of the load.
I imagine the needle motor works best with a constant current.
BTW it's usually not a hard task to change a transformer...

The power supply is old and "the industry workhorse" ....

That would make sense.

As for the transformer, he didn't have the bread to buy a new one and I
didn't have anything close in the parts box(s).

Thanks to all for the explanation.
