Hello all. I am having a problem working this kind of problem out.

If I have a series RL circuit and I know the inductance of the coil in henrys, the resistance of the resistor in ohms. It is an ac circuit but I dont know the frequency

My question is. Can I work out the reactance without the frequency? And, can i work out the impedance in the circuit with those numbers.

An example would be appreciated. Thankyou

    you would need the frequency

You could use the formula to create a curve that is based on frequency, and therefor create a curve of the impedance

But without the frequency you wont get numbers, only equations

cheers. What about in a RC circuit. Would I still need the frequency to work out capacitive reactance?

    yes you do

go and have a look at the formula, see on the bottom line the f = frequency :)

    cheers
